iPhone 4: Steve Jobs Press Conference summary

Posted on July 17, 2010

Wow ! I manage to stay up to follow the live blog ( thro’ Engadget, Gizmodo and gdgt ). The press conference started at 1 am and ended at about 220 am. Steve jobs presentation was only 40 minutes, the rest were Q & A session. It was classic Steve Jobs style when he said  ” We’re not perfect. Phones aren’t perfect. We know that, you know that. But we want to make all our users happy. If you don’t know that, you don’t know Apple. We’re going to talk about how we’re going to do that.”

He spend I’d say 95 % of his time defending Apple’s product strength, research and testing facilities. He did not really address exactly whether the design of the antenna creates some of the signal issues. Jobs explained that the signal degradation was indeed a hardware issue (though one, they claim, the affects all cell phones). The  iOS 4.01 update has a more accurate signal algorithm should help iPhone 4 users get a better sense of what kind of service they can expect at any given location.  He rubbish off claims from New York Times that  a software fix is ” making stuff up” . He’ll provide an update later about the proximity sensor issue.

Here are the other answers from Steve Jobs :

– the iPhone 4 signal/reception issue is overblown. Only 0.55 % call Apple Care to complain and 1.7 % wants a refund
– he demo Blackberry Bold , htc Droid, Samsung Omnia II to proof these phones do also have similar problems
– Apple will give a free bumper case ( or Apple selected cases )  to all buyers . Buyers who’d bought the bumper case can claim a refund. 3rd party cases will not be entitle for refund claims. Offer is till end Sept
– Apple will accept all return of its phone if buyer is still unhappy
