Google Maps 4.4 for Android updated with Places

Posted on July 27, 2010

Yesterday, Google updated its Maps (version 4.4) with a vastly improved Places  feature packaged directly into Maps. The new update can be found in the marketplace as Google Maps. You will now see a new icon “Places” in your menu screen.

Selecting it will display a new revamped UI listing which allows users  users to quickly search local businesses by category or by entering the name or type of establishment you wish to discover.  You will see seven categories which you might try to locate nearby: restaurants, coffee, bars, hotels, attractions, ATMs, and gas stations.

At the top is a search bar and a shortcut to the Maps application. An “Add” button allows you to create your own shortcuts for often searched items, eg restaurants

Even in a small town such as my place, the search details is very good. Tapping on for example hotels,  brings up a list of the nearby hotels. Selecting any of the entries will bring up more details such as address, reviews, website address, directions, other links to compare prices, and a sharing feature

Google Maps for mobile 4.4 is compatible with Android version 1.6 and above.
