Microsoft’s COO Kevin Turner , in a presentation regarding WP7  said, “in the October timeframe and the November timeframe, October likely across Europe and November likely across the U.S. we’re back in this game.”  We’re due to see handsets from Dell, HTC, Samsung, LG, and ASUS on or shortly after launch.

Microsoft COO Kevin Turner said   Microsoft will be back in the game come this fall. Some have declared that the only two viable players in the smartphone market are Android and iPhone, but Turner thinks otherwise.

He correctly called Microsoft’s lack of a competitive smartphone operating system a lowlight in the above video. The good news is that come October we’ll get to see if Windows Phone 7 is the real deal once Microsoft’s partners start releasing these devices and consumers start voting with their wallets.

As Turner pointed out,the market for smartphones is still in its infancy, with the number of devices being sold on annual basis expected to double over the next few years.

Turner also pointed out that the new devices are ‘not like any phone you’ve seen from Microsoft.’ That may well be true, but are they any better or different than the competition? Will Sprint, Verizon and AT&T put as much effort into promoting Windows Phone 7 devices as they have put into promoting iPhones and Android-powered devices? Will third parties promote Microsoft’s devices by pumping out compatible accessories, speakers and automobiles? Only time will tell.

The game might not be over, but Apple and Google have one hell of a head start.
