iPAD : iOS 4.2 Firmware Updates – will it make iPad better ?

Posted on September 5, 2010

On 1 Sep at the Apple’s event held at San Fransisco, Steve Job announced a firmware update ver 4.2 for the iPad by November. Apple’s website has now post more details and will it be a welcomed update ?  Most Apple Diehards will attest to this even before seeing and experiencing  it , as anything from Apple has to be good. Being an owner of the iPad, I hope so but I do not and never get carried away like those Apple fanboys. I have listed some of my opinions of the new features

iOS 4 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. And soon iPad owners will get to enjoy its 100+ new features and innovations — including multitasking, folders, printing, and more. Look for iOS 4.2 coming in November for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

” Most advanced ” ? – is again another case of typical Apple’s boast of their product. Apple never fail to use such words .

Features include:

• Multitasking: Run all your favorite apps — and switch between them instantly — without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.2

Apple is misleading us  as based on the iOS4.1 of  iPhone 4 , the multitasking is not true multitasking. Multitasking is limited to apps that support it – this limitation is not highlighted. I seriously doubt the words ” without slowing down ” as feedbacks  now on the web by many users of iPhone 4 ,  performance is affected  due to poor implementation of multitasking

• Folders: Organize apps into folders with drag-and-drop simplicity. Get faster access to your favorites and browse and manage thousands of apps.

A good feature which will be well appreciated by all users – I look forward to it

• Wireless Printing: Print mail, photos, web pages, and more directly to a printer on a wireless network.

Based on Steve Job’s demo. it looks good and easy. Main issue will be the compatibility of  printers . This would mean this feature is useful only when you have access to such printers but nevertheless  is still a good added feature

• AirPlay: Wirelessly stream videos, music, and photos from iPad to the new Apple TV, and stream music to AirPlay speakers or receivers, including AirPort Express.

• Game Center: Experience social gaming on your iPad. Find friends or use auto-match to play multiplayer games against new opponents. Track achievements and compare high scores.

• Even better Mail: See messages from all your accounts in a unified inbox, organize messages by threads, and open attachments in third-party apps.

I really hope there will be a great improvement here. iPAD email feature is the worst email program I have ever used. Even my smartphone email program ( the HTC HD2 and Google Nexus ) does a better job. I’d also say the iPad email is the worst default program of the iPad.  It is slow in downloading and is very frustrating each time waiting for the mail to download – with attachments,  it is even worse and an agonizing wait  . This is one of the reasons why I jailbreak so I can use Backgrounder – emails allow to download in background while I do other tasks on the iPad

• Find text on web pages: In Safari, easily find and highlight specific words and phrases on large web pages.

An improved feature but Safari still sucks even with this added. Atomic Browser will still be a better alternative

• Enhanced enterprise support: Businesses can take advantage of stronger security features, new device management capabilities, and improved enterprise integration.

• Accessibility enhancements: Control VoiceOver using a wireless keyboard. Output in braille to over 30 supported wireless Bluetooth refreshable braille displays in more than 25 languages.

• Keyboard and dictionary enhancements: Choose from more than 30 new keyboards and dictionaries, including Arabic, Greek, and Hebrew.
